The Brookings Parks, Recreation & Forestry Department plans to enhance Brookings residents’ pickleball experience using a $75,000 Wellmark Foundation grant they were recently awarded.
Pickleball is one of the fastest-growing sports nationwide, with approximately 4.8 million players in the US in 2021. It’s inexpensive to play and has strong participation and advocacy in Brookings.
A need for a pickleball space has been in the works for several years and was identified in the 2021 Park Master Plan. Through the grant, the City is able to provide a portion of the funding for the construction of an eight-court pickleball court complex at Hillcrest Park, stating, “we are very excited to partner with the Wellmark Foundation to help provide another quality space to foster health and wellness in Brookings.” The anticipated construction of the project is 2023.
