The City of Brookings has named Steve Lamken as interim police chief who will serve during the vacancy and transition from Chief Erickson’s retirement to hiring Brookings’ new police chief.
The hiring process for a new chief will take two to three months or longer. The City has opted to bring in an interim chief during this time to assist in the continuation of leadership efforts, daily operations, projects, and advancements that will continue to take place at the Brookings Police Department. “The Brookings Police Department consists of professional, dedicated individuals who serve our community,” said City Manager Paul Briseno. “As the largest city department, we have sought to support the employees and leadership throughout the search for the next police chief.”
Steve, a retired police chief from Grand Island, Nebraska, will step in as interim chief starting May 1, 2022, stating, “I look forward to serving the community of Brookings.” Other roles he has held include police chief of Kearney and Ogallala, Nebraska, and director of the Nebraska State Law Enforcement Training Center.
