REPORTS
Executive Reports
CEO Report
Merkley highlighted information regarding Brookings Health System’s new employee recognition and reward program, Awardco. The new program will be rolled out in March and will standardize employee recognition and appreciation. The software platform utilizes Amazon.com and has the ability to include items and gift cards from local stores which will provide our employees many options for purchase and a common platform to utilize with our staff.
Merkley also commented the Director of Nutrition and Food Services position has been filled by John Harvey. Harvey has been with Brookings Health for five (5) years filling the role of a Dietary Supervisor at The Neighborhoods at Brookview. Harvey is a graduate of the Culinary Arts program at Mitchell Technical Institute.
CFO Report
Wagner provided further details regarding the three (3) Rural Health Clinics located in White, Volga and Arlington. In 2021 indirect gross revenue from the Rural Health Clinics resulting from referrals for outpatient testing, laboratory and therapy services exceeded $650k. Additionally, coding audits are taking place which has resulted in an increase in reimbursement, but has also provided education to the coding team on how to more accurately code our inpatient admissions going forward.
CNO Report
Hillestad stated as patient census begins to stabilize and decrease from our high census periods, the spread of COVID-19, staff will begin to regroup and readdress initiatives and other matters that have been tabled for the last three (3) or so months. Additionally, in conjunction with the Department of Health and Social Services, Brookings Health is 1 of 5 hospitals in South Dakota selected to pilot the program “Avoid Opioid SD” to help address opioid abuse and misuse in the state.
Board Committee Reports
Administrative Committee Meeting
Committee member Englund provided a report; the Administrative Committee met on February 24, 2022. Topics of discussion included Workforce/Market Adjustments/Staff Engagement, SDSU/BEDC/VB Funding, BHS Strategic Plan, Medical Staff Leadership, Legislative Update, Provider Recruitment Update, BHS Foundation – Team Isaac, RTU/HVAC Bids and Avera/BHS Home Medical Equipment Joint Venture.
Finance Committee:
Committee member Morgan provided a report; the Finance Committee met on February 24, 2022. The committee reviewed and approved the payables, financials and adjustments for January 2022. Further discussion took place regarding concerns for the long term care industry. Merkley noted we are very fortunate in Brookings, but other long term care facilities have lost a record number of residents and staff to the pandemic. The industry as a whole continues to face significant staffing challenges and there are fewer referrals for placement in these facilities as individuals seek home health care services as an alternative to skilled nursing facilities.
Quality Committee
Committee member Ellsworth provided a report; the Quality Committee met on February 24, 2022. Wound Center Program Director, Kim Long, was invited to provide a synopsis of Brookings Health System’s Wound Care Program and quality outcomes using Hyperbaric Oxygen therapy. Other topics of discussion included 2021’s Organ/Tissue & Eye Donation Procurement program, Promoting Interoperability and Awards Brookings Health was recently recognized for. Merkley added, Brookings Health was just notified today our facility has once again been identified as one of the Top 20 rural community hospitals in America; this award is in addition to recently being included on the Top 100 Rural & Community Hospitals list and as one of Newsweek’s World’s Best Hospitals for 2022.
OLD BUSINESS
COVID-19/Vaccination Process
Merkley noted we are finally beginning to see a decline in Covid cases and the CDC ranks Brookings County with a low transmission rate. The CDC has also issued new guidelines on masking and we may soon see changes for hospitals and healthcare. Ellsworth shared there are currently 81 patients hospitalized within the Avera system. These numbers are back to what they were in late September 2021.
Upon motion by Morgan, second by Ellsworth the meeting adjourned at 6:45 p.m. Motion carried unanimously.
Respectfully submitted,
