Brookings, S.D. – Brookings Health System received overwhelming response for the “Love Our Health Care Workers” campaign. 2,215 paper hearts with messages of love, hope, kindness and support were received in the special red mailbox courtesy of Brookings Lowe's outside the health system's 22nd Avenue entrance.
“It was very refreshing,” said Gabrielle Millard, RN, Inpatient Clinical Coordinator, in an interview with KELO News last week. “With the pandemic, we’ve had highs and lows. When those lows have hit, the community definitely has stepped in to show their support, and proved that they are part of our team as well.”

Originally, the goal was to receive 1,000 paper hearts. With more than double that goal, the hospital staff was able to completely cover the windows in the inpatient care waiting room and move on to other areas in the hospital to display the hearts and messages.

“I walk this hallway several times a day going from inpatient just to the elevators…To see the colors compared to what it was before, of course with winter, it’s gloomy out, so the colors definitely add some cheerfulness to the area!” Millard said.
The Love Our Health Care Workers challenge truly demonstrated the support and togetherness of the Brookings community.
