Douglas Chittick Community Gardens
Availability
Each year the Brookings Parks and Recreation Department rents garden plots to Brookings residents. Plots are available for annual and perennial planting. They are available on a first-come, first-serve basis for new gardeners, but may be reserved year-to-year by those returning from the previous year. More than one plot may be reserved.
The City Garden Plots are located at the northeast corner of Medary Avenue and Highway 14 Bypass intersection (south of the go-cart track).
Accessible Raised Community Garden Beds 2017 Pilot Project
- We have four raised garden beds available for the 2023 planting season at Douglas Chittick Community Gardens located at the northeast corner of Medary Avenue and Highway 14 Bypass.
- The raised garden beds provide people an opportunity to participate in seasonal plantings. The garden beds are approximately 4 feet wide by 15 feet long. Two beds are 19 inches tall and two beds are 30 inches tall. The raised beds are parallel to each other, which makes it more convenient for wheelchair access.
- Eagle Scout Seth Smith and the Parks, Recreation & Forestry Department received the 2016 A.B.L.E. Award which was presented by the Brookings Committee for People who have Disabilities for the raised garden bed project.
- For garden bed reservation pricing, procedures and guidelines please contact the Brookings Parks, Recreation & Forestry Department at (605) 692-2708.
Fees
Each plot measures approximately 20 feet by 25 feet and is rented for $35 per season.
Each plot is roto-tilled, fertilized, measured and numbered. Additionally, there are hose bibs in each row, so gardeners can take out their own garden hose and water their own plot. Most gardeners prefer to water their own garden as the underground system is used sparingly.
Deadline for Reserving
The previous year's gardeners receive a letter in October informing them when they need to have their produce out of the gardens, so they can be plowed before it snows. In this letter, these gardeners are given until January 31 to reserve their plot for the next summer season. Starting February 1, any garden not reserved is made available to the general public for reservation.
